He has been getting much better at bottle feeding and takes about 30% of his milk that way. Both us enjoy taking turns feeding him. See the video below! We still intend to breastfeed and bottle feed when the time comes, but since he is a preemie and needs additional calories and supplements added to breast milk, this is the only way to get him moving in that direction.
Welcome to Dan and Michelle Ackland's blog. We found out that we were expecting back in July 2011. At our first sonogram, we found out we would be expecting two new members of our family. We had another sonogram on September 19th and sure enough, there were three little Ackland's in there! We want to share our journey and have a central place to go for people who would like to help.

Misc. and Joys of the Day
We have been receiving lots of cards lately - Thank You! We are enjoying the city of Ann Arbor, which is a beautiful place with lots of nice restaurants and things to do. The snow has also been fun to watch.
Joys of the Day
1. Caden is off his humidity, so now we can put clothes on him!
2. Ate a nice home-cooked meal at Ronald McDonald House prepared by volunteers.
3. Found out we didn't have to pay a $800 medical bill.

BABY DAY!!!
Events of the morning: Contractions woke me up at 5 am. At this point, I was on meds that were supposed to be controlling the pain of contractions, so I knew it was probably baby day. At 6, my nurse came in to take my vitals and I let her know that contractions were about 5 minutes apart and fairly uncomfortable. She hooked me up to monitors, and said she would let the doctors know, but that the contractions may stop in a few hours. (EXACTLY what I was hoping for, hours and hours of waiting to see if they went away!) Luckily monitors confirmed that I was indeed having contractions, and when doctors made rounds, they said it was time to get moving. By 9 am, I was in the O.R. receiving my spinal. The babies arrived at 9:28, 9:29, and 9:30!
Caden Allen: 2 lb. 12 oz. 15 inches. Caden came out crying and healthy. He has a head full of white blonde hair, and is doing very well overall. He has one line into is umbilical cord for feeding, and is getting extra oxygen via CPAP. There is a chance he’ll end up on a ventilator to help him breath, but based on his gestational age, he is doing VERY well.
Tarson J: 2 lb. 9 oz. (we need to check on length?) Tarson also came out crying with a head full of white blonde hair. While he came out looking perfect as can be, the left side of his heart isn’t working, and the right side isn’t perfect either. In a bigger baby, they would reconfigure his heart so that the right heart would do the work (this is a multiple surgery process done over several months). Unfortunately, Tarson’s heart is so small that surgery would be nearly impossible, and likely only prolong his suffering. Based on how the next couple days go, we’ll have to decide whether we want to try surgery, or just make him comfortable.
Laken Janelle: 1 lb. 5 oz. 11 ¾ inches. Laken was also a cryer with lots of white blond hair. Unlike what we expected, her face appears normal, and doctors said that if they didn’t know about previous speculation on chromosomal issues, they wouldn’t have suspected anything based on her facial features. HOWEVER, there is now a question of her gender. It appears Laken wasn’t getting all the nutrients she needed, and her head got the bulk of nutrition. Her genitalia is unclear, and will be determined with a karyotype. Since we were under the impression that her chance of survival was so minimal, to find out that her only issue may be waiting on genitalia to develop, we are pleased as can be!! (We will change her name if she turns out to be a he.)
Mom: I am doing well. Within hours of my C-section, I ate and walked to prove I was ready to see my babies. I am in no pain except when I move, but even moving hasn’t been terrible. I did experience motion sickness on the way back from seeing the babies, but have otherwise been very comfortable.
